St Teresa's College, Abergowrie, has served the needs of families since 1933. There is a strong rural dimension to the college that has developed from pioneering days with the Christian Brothers, at the then Bishop of Townsville, to provide a College that caters mainly for boys from rural backgrounds.

The college has excelled over the last decade in supporting parents and communities to educate remote Indigenous Australian students from the Northern Territory, Cape York, the Torres Strait, and even the southern Queensland area.

As a Catholic residential boarding College, we can offer students a very complete and fulfilling educational experience in partnership with their parents.

St Teresa's College Abergowrie is a Catholic secondary boy boarding college located in the Herbert River Valley, 38 km from Ingham, situated on Warrgamay land. We are an inclusive community, embracing families from the Australian mainland and islands and international students from Papua New Guinea. More than 40 communities are represented within the college, and as many as 70 languages and dialects are spoken. Many faith traditions live in our faith community, enriching the living of the message of Jesus Christ and sharing in the truth and challenge of the Gospel.

St Teresa's College, Abergowrie strives to:

    • Create a home away from home and purposely build an inclusive, safe, life-giving environment.
    • Create an Abergowrie family where the spirit of Jesus Christ is joyfully embraced and evidenced.
    • Create a learning environment that is relevant, appropriate, and authentic to the needs of all students, in line with Townsville Catholic Education Office curriculum guidelines.
    • Create effective programs that innovatively engage students to grow into successful, good men.
    • Create an environment of outreach within the college, drawing on the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice.

The Community Engagement Officer role is to establish and manage the development of the cultural programs for students, provide pastoral care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families work closely with key stakeholder groups including Townsville Catholic Education Officers, the College Leadership Team, The Community Consultation Committee and external government agencies. The Community Engagement Officer also provides leadership and advice in community capacity building within the College context with a particular focus on the community consultation meetings and coordination of staff visits to remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

St Teresa's College, Abergowrie understands it can be difficult for some families to travel to our school, so St Teresa's College, Abergowrie comes to you. The college's community visits offer families in remote and regional areas the opportunity to ask questions and meet College staff who welcome both new inquiries and old faces.

These community visits provide an opportunity to meet with families who have entrusted St Teresa's College, Abergowrie College with their sons, and keep in touch with our College Old Boys. Visiting staff organize meeting rooms to allow new families to ask questions. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and Newsletters to find where we are visiting next.
