St Augustine's College aims to focus on continuous improvement continuous focused improvement every single day. The process is supported by the traditions and strengths of our College – the teachings of the Catholic Church, the Marist Charism, and the family spirit which permeates all that we do.
As a Catholic School in the Diocese of Cairns, we view quality education as being focused on our students' full development: intellectually, spiritually, physically, morally, and emotionally. In this sense, we embolden our students to find meaning and value in their lives to become compassionate, contributing members of our society.
St Augustine's first opened its doors in 1930 as an all-boys Marist boarding school. The first Marist school opened in Queensland and continues to allow students to be educated at a fine Catholic Marist school.
St Augustine's provides boarding facilities for both boys and girls. While our boys are educated here at the College, our girls are educated at St Monica's College, a short drive from our Campus. The convenience of having one Boarding facility that caters to both boys and girls has proven to be a popular option for our parents.
St Augustine's prides itself on being a comprehensive College where students of a wide range of abilities are given opportunities to fulfill their boundless potential. We focus on providing boys with a balanced education, incorporating a range of learning, spiritual, physical, and recreational experiences. Saints are renowned for their outstanding academic, cultural, and sporting achievements, with links to the local and international community and, of course, rural Australia.
There is much commentary today around that schools must be places of individually tailored learning. Students now use tools invented less than a decade ago and embrace new technologies quickly and easily. They demand almost instant access to information and have such advanced skills that, at times, we must remember that they are still adolescents with all the issues and awkwardness that these years can present. At St Augustine's, we strive to provide that balance required for success.
The students are at the heart of everything we do at Saints. We are here to help the students entrusted to us by their families to find genuine fulfillment, happiness, and security in their lives. Our support and encouragement go well beyond graduation day. As a College community, we take great joy and strength from our ongoing relationships with our ex-students and their families. To be a part of the Saints family is truly a gift for life.
St Augustine's is the oldest continuing Marist school in Queensland. The Marist Brothers established the College in the growing town of Cairns in 1930 when the northern Queensland gold rushes were still a living memory. Its first members were three Brothers and ninety-six students.
The College proliferated, doubling its staff and enrolment within a year. It soon established a reputation for academic achievement - presenting students for both Scholarship and Junior from its first year, and enrolling students for the Senior Certificate as one of only a handful of schools outside of Brisbane doing this at the time - as well as for its sports success, its cultural activities, and its strong spirit. By 1938 a new classroom wing building had been erected.
The shortages and the threats of World War 2 provided unique challenges for the College. The boarders - then, most of the enrolment - temporarily moved to Lake Barrine on the Atherton Tablelands in 1942. After the war, pressure for boarding and day places continued, particularly during two periods of Brother Gildas's principalship in the 1950s and 1960s.
By the 1960s, despite the gradual addition of other buildings, it was clear that there needed to be a massive building program. An ambitious master plan was implemented in the 1970s, which saw new classrooms, dormitories, hall, swimming pool, administration wing, and Brothers' monastery. Further land was purchased, and the Design and Technology Centre built.
The 1980s and 1990s saw considerable development of the College's curriculum, the expansion of staff, the further upgrade of facilities and development of the grounds, and the consolidation of tradition. During the last decade, St Augustine's has enjoyed unparalleled academic success and considerable expansion of its cultural and sporting programs. Significant capital developments have included the construction of Lennon Hall, McLaughlin Theatre, the Gildas Centre, and significant ICT upgrades. The College is now in its fourth quarter-century as a vibrant, contemporary educational institution.
