Unit Information

7 North is a 31 bed Medical Surgical GI/GU unit located in Butterworth Hospital. This unit is known for its outstanding teamwork and welcoming atmosphere! At 7 North opportunities to learn and grow never stop due to the variety in patient population, this unit is considered a medical/surgical unit but specializes in the care of urology and surgical oncology post-operative patients as well as those with gastrointestinal diagnoses. This team stands out as being experts in nasogastric tubes, urinary catheters and urologic care, and managing the care of wounds, ostomies, tubes and drains. Examples of surgeries that may take place on 7 North include: nephrectomy; whipple; cholecystectomy; pancreatectomy; kidney donor. Life outside of work is important and 7 North provides a variety of different scheduling models. Traditional schedules focus on a rotating schedule that team members can count on so that they can easily plan non-work events around their work schedules and trade or re-arrange shifts ahead of time when necessary. While most of our team utilizes a traditional schedule, we also offer non-traditional scheduling options to assist with those that need full flexibility in their work schedule. While each job posting may list a specific schedule you are encouraged to apply even if the posted schedule does not meet your needs as the recruiter or hiring leader may be able to work with you to figure out a schedule that will work for you.

Essential Functions

  • Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients.

  • The role will begin with 2 days of training in a simulation center and 1 day of EPIC training with our Nurse Educators.  These are prescheduled classes from 8 am to 4:30 pm.  These in person classes will typically fall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday week 1 of employment.  Because these classes are prescheduled, you must attend all full days, and we cannot reschedule any of the required dates if you cannot attend.  Attendance is compensated, as it is required for compliance. The remainder of your training is done on your unit, during the hours of the position you accepted and is also compensated.  In addition, a Nurse Technician is often floated to other departments of higher need based with similar training. If they are outside of a unit with their similar training (like a med-surg NT going to ICU or HDVCH) they would typically just be acting as a safety attendant. But all typical units they are floated to would have very similar expectations and training.
