Job Description Summary:

The Director of Digital Network Communications provides strategic and operational leadership for the communications technologies that support patient care, business operations, and collaboration across the OhioHealth system.

This role is responsible for enterprise digital voice services, audiovisual and collaboration technologies, distributed antenna systems, small-cell solutions, private 5G and private LTE technologies, in-building cellular coverage, and related communications infrastructure.

The Director will lead these services across a healthcare system that includes 16 hospitals, more than 250 care sites and approximately $6 billion in annual revenue. The environment includes acute-care hospitals, ambulatory facilities, administrative offices, clinical contact centers, command centers, conference spaces, and other locations that depend on reliable, secure, and highly available communications.

This position requires a leader who can develop a long-term communications strategy while ensuring dependable day-to-day service. The Director will work closely with clinical operations, facilities, construction, information security, emergency management, networking, telecommunications carriers, technology vendors, and other internal and external partners.

Responsibilities And Duties:

20% - Team Leadership & DevelopmentLead and mentor engineering teams, including managers, advisors, network architects, engineers, specialists.
Build a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
Ensure workforce planning, skill development, and succession strategies are in place.

20% - Strategic Architecture & Engineering Leadership
Develop and maintain the strategic roadmap for your respective technology domain.
Lead the design and engineering of solutions that meet enterprise requirements for performance, reliability, scalability, and security.
Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption strategies aligned with organizational goals.
Ensure architectural consistency and alignment with enterprise architecture standards.

15% - Design & Build Delivery
Oversee engineering teams responsible for your respective technology domain.
Lead the design, build, and deployment of new infrastructure solutions, upgrades, and major technology refreshes.
Ensure engineering deliverables include documentation, diagrams, standards, and operational readiness materials.
Partner with the Director of Infrastructure Operations to ensure smooth handoff into run‑state support.
15% - Project & Portfolio ManagementOversee the engineering project portfolio for initiatives in your area.
Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with strategic priorities.
Provide technical leadership for large‑scale infrastructure modernization efforts.
15% - Financial & Vendor ManagementDevelop and manage capital and project budgets for design/build initiatives.
Evaluate and select technology solutions, vendors, and partners.
Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and performance for engineering‑related services and products.
10% - Cross‑Functional CollaborationWork closely with peer design/build directors to ensure integrated infrastructure solutions across network, telecom, platforms, data center, and endpoint technologies.
Collaborate with clinical, business, and application teams to understand requirements and translate them into technical designs.
Partner with Information Security to ensure secure architectures and compliance with healthcare regulations.
5% - Governance, Standards & ComplianceEstablish engineering standards, design patterns, and best practices for network and telecom technologies.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Joint Commission, and internal security policies.
Participate in risk assessments, architectural reviews, and technology governance processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience

Field of Study: Business Administration

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. ITIL certification or equivalent experience with IT service management frameworks.

Knowledge of enterprise communications technologies necessary to support clinical operations and information systems, including digital voice, unified communications, audiovisual and collaboration platforms, telecommunications carrier services, distributed antenna systems, small-cell solutions, in-building cellular systems, and private wireless technologies. Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret business, clinical, technical, operational, security, and financial drivers to support the department and organization.

Highly skilled in strategic planning, technology roadmaps, architectural standards, contract and vendor negotiations, financial planning, capital and operating budget management, service management, and leadership of highly technical associates and resources. Strong interpersonal skills and proven leadership are required.

Kind and Length of Experience: Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience in telecommunications, voice, audiovisual systems, wireless communications, networking, infrastructure, or a related information technology discipline, including progressive leadership responsibilities.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

• Master's Degree in Computer Information Systems, Business Administration, Healthcare, Healthcare Administration, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
• Experience supporting a hospital, health system, academic medical center, or other 24-hour critical-service environment is beneficial. Experience supporting multiple hospitals and a large network of ambulatory, outpatient, administrative, and clinical facilities is desired. 
• Experience with cloud-based unified communications, enterprise voice and contact-center platforms, SIP services, call routing, emergency calling, session border controllers, carrier connectivity, Microsoft Teams Rooms, Cisco collaboration technologies, Zoom, or comparable platforms is desired. 
• Experience designing or managing distributed antenna systems, neutral-host systems, small-cell solutions, public-safety radio enhancement, private LTE, private 5G, audiovisual environments, healthcare construction, facility design, mergers, acquisitions, or technology integrations is preferred. 
• Familiarity with clinical communications, nurse call, secure messaging, paging, overhead announcement, telehealth, emergency notification, patient-access systems, connected medical devices, robotics, asset tracking, and other healthcare mobility use cases is beneficial. 
• Extremely self-motivated, with the ability to lead through ambiguity, drive resources toward deadlines, explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences, and solve problems in a highly dynamic environment. Relevant certifications in networking, telecommunications, audiovisual systems, wireless technologies, cybersecurity, project management, or service management are beneficial.
