Fiber Winding Technician - San Diego, CA | leidos Job

Leidos’ Undersea Systems Division is seeking a skilled Precision Fiber Optics Winding Technician to support fabrication, assembly, quality assurance of precision wound fiber optics packs and support maintenance of specialized equipment used in fabrication. This technician will have tasks to assist in development of infrastructure for the winding lab in which they will be working.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, mechanically inclined, organized, and comfortable operating in dynamic field and marine environments.

Skills & Key Responsibilities

• Precision Fiber-Optic Winding:
  • No experience in fiber winding is required.
  • We are looking for 5+ years of experience in skilled technician work in fields including but not limited to: Machining, electrician, metal fabrication, PCB Fabrication, etc…
  • Ability to stay on task for 8 hours continuous when winding, with only necessary breaks.
• Quality Control:
  • Ability to follow rigorous quality standards.
  • Ability to maintain meticulous records on quality assurance.
  • Ability to follow and log information in work orders.
• Fiber-Optic Assembly & Testing
  • Ability to perform OTDR diagnostic testing.  No previous experience required.
  • Ability to handle, splice and test fiber optic connections.  No previous experience required.
• General Assembly & Fabrication
  • Ability to read & interpret engineering prints and build to them.
  • Ability to use or learn to use NC lathes, drill presses and milling machines.
  • General hand tool skills.

Required Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capability.
• Creating, maintaining and working in clean workspaces.
• Handling of HAZMAT materials, such as solvents and polyurethane.
• Physical ability to:
  • Navigate lab, office, and warehouse environments—including frequent movement around piers, docks, and facility spaces—with the ability to stoop, kneel, reach for extended periods, and transport objects weighing up to 50 lbs. across the facility.
  • Use hands to precisely operate machinery, tools, and computer equipment.
  • Climb ladders up to 20 ft and work comfortably in loud production environments, various temperatures, and inclement weather. This includes a willingness to work aboard marine vessels of various sizes, occasionally on an overnight basis.

Work Environment & Schedule

This position requires a combination of laboratory, fabrication shop, dockside, and at-sea operational support. Candidates should be comfortable working in fast-paced technical environments with shifting priorities and mission-driven schedules.  The work schedule is 9/80B, which includes every other Friday off.  The work is on-site only.
