Who you will work with

You will join McKinsey as part of our Manufacturing and Supply Chain (MSC) Solutions group, a component of McKinsey’s Operations practice that focuses on deeply tech-enabling our client service. MSC Solutions comprises an ecosystem of customizable, web-based digital tools that apply advanced analytical methods to turbocharge McKinsey diagnostics while serving as a platform on which clients can digitize their supply chain networks and production environments to improve performance. Our open-source technology allows groups to capitalize on existing digital modules and use pre-built benchmarking infrastructure.
You will work directly with our clients and McKinsey colleagues to deploy our digital and analytics capabilities and ensure we bring tangible, lasting impact to clients. Our client service teams are working with major global organizations across multiple industries to solve their most challenging problems. In most cases, this means working on site, directly with client engineering groups. Additionally, you will work with internal product development teams to ensure we optimize our digital and analytics capabilities and constantly innovate.

What you will do

You’ll work in small teams playing an active role in the client engagement. Typically, your specific project activities include performing diagnostics, and customizing and implementing our analytical tools across the clients’ organization.
You will use a tech-enabled approach to tackle client challenges related to end-to-end supply chain planning from demand forecasting and inventory management to S&OP, production planning and scheduling, and order management. The increasing complexity of integrated tactical and operational systems, combined with an explosion of data, makes these topics both top-of-mind and deeply challenging for many clients. Capitalizing upon your analytics and data science background, you will fortify and enhance MSC’s digital tools to customize the output to precise client situations. Most importantly, you will develop insights and implement solutions which produce tangible and lasting impact for our clients’ operational performance.
The client projects will range from quick diagnostics up to multi-month digital implementations. In between studies, you will bring your learnings back to our internal team to help refine digital modules and ideate powerful new capabilities.
Through your work, you’ll have opportunities to present results to client management and implement recommendations in collaboration with client team members. You’ll gain new skills and build on the strengths you bring to the firm.

Your background

  • Master’s degree or PhD in an analytics/data centric area such as supply chain management, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or industrial engineering
  • 1+ years of operations research, analytics and/or data science work in industry with a focus on supply chain topics (research work during PhD studies may count as work experience)
  • Extensive knowledge on analytical concepts relevant for supply chain optimization, such as statistics, time-series analyses including classical operations research methods, in particular mathematical programming (esp. mixed-integer linear programming) and corresponding IT tools (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, AIMMs), and also methods from applied statistics (esp. time series forecasting) and stochastic modelling and optimization (e.g., Markov Decision Processes)
  • Understanding of IT (e.g. databases and data structures) and demonstrated knowledge of at least one standard programming language (e.g. Python, C++, Java)
  • Ideally a good understanding of supply chain concepts such as supply chain strategy, production management, scheduling, network design, inventory, and logistics
  • Demonstrated: strong conceptual and analytical skills; success in working on high impact cross-functional teams; strong decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding record of academic achievement
  • Demonstrated aptitude for analytics and data science, plus appropriate educational and on-the-job training
  • Proven record of leadership in a work setting and/or through extracurricular activities, and an entrepreneurial bent
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels in an organization
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively – both verbally and in writing – in English
