As an Ammonia Refrigeration Technician, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of our industrial refrigeration systems, with a specific focus on ammonia-based systems. Your role will play a critical part in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our refrigeration equipment to support our production processes and maintain product quality and safety standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Maintenance:
    • Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks on production machinery, including conveyors, mixers, packaging equipment, and refrigeration systems.
    • Perform routine inspections and maintenance of industrial refrigeration systems, particularly those utilizing ammonia as a refrigerant.
    • Monitor and troubleshoot system performance, identifying and resolving issues related to cooling, pressure, and temperature control.
    • Conduct regular checks on compressors, condensers, evaporators, and associated equipment to ensure optimal functioning.
    • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns or malfunctions, diagnosing problems and implementing effective solutions to minimize downtime.
    • Respond promptly and provide emergency unscheduled troubleshooting and repairs of production equipment during the manufacturing process to prevent disruptions to production.
  • Facility Maintenance:
    • Monitor and repair facility systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, to support a safe and comfortable working environment.
  • Waste Water Duties:
    • Operate and maintain site waste water treatment facility to operate within the requirements of and maintain compliance with South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) issued permit.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and safe work practices.
    • Participate in safety training programs and contribute to the development of safety initiatives to promote a culture of safety.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (GMP, HACCP, OSHA) and company policies related to food safety, sanitation, and environmental regulations.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, equipment inspections, and inventory management.
    • Document equipment repairs, parts replacements, and maintenance procedures to track equipment history and performance.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Coordinate with production supervisors and operators to prioritize maintenance tasks and minimize disruptions to production schedules.
    • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineering, quality assurance, and safety personnel, to address maintenance issues and implement solutions.
    • Provide technical assistance and training to production staff on equipment operation, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Flexibility to work non-standard hours as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education/Certifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • Technical training or certification in refrigeration systems is preferred.
  • 5 years’ related experience in industrial manufacturing environment, preferably in an automated food processing plant.
  • Proven experience (3+ years) in industrial refrigeration maintenance, with a focus on ammonia-based systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have a strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong understanding of refrigeration principles, including compression, condensation, and evaporation cycles.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations pertaining to ammonia refrigeration systems (e.g., PSM/RMP).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment for troubleshooting and repair.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to maintenance and repair work.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills to interact effectively with colleagues and management.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work involves daily and frequent exposure to variety of environmental conditions such as: dirt, dust, fumes, odors, darkness and/or poor lighting, noise, vibration, cold/hot temperatures, wetness, and humidity.
  • Work environment involves daily exposure to physical risks and hazards, such as working around mechanical equipment, mechanical hazards, forklifts, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire and explosives hazards, communicable diseases.
  • Position requires the ability to stand; walking around office, warehouse, and plant; lifting and carrying packages up to 50 pounds; utilizing fine dexterity; and reaching, kneeling, crawling, and twisting on a daily basis; working in confined spaces.
