On March 18, 1887, an agreement was signed between the city of Lille and the state. The city agrees to build the Natural Sciences Institute of Physics, Chemistry, Classical Archaeology, and of the Faculties of Law and Letters with financial support from the state. The Act of July 10, 1896, is the University of Lille, supplemented by specialized agencies.
With the restructuring of French universities imposed by the law of November 12, 1968, three universities are created in Lille University of Science and Technology (Lille 1), the University of Law and Health (Lille 2) and University of Human Sciences, Letters and Arts (Lille 3). In 1974, the university moved to Lille 3 Angellier rue de Lille to the site of Villeneuve d'Ascq, Lille, shared with 2. In October 1974, Lille 3 students discovered for the first time their new campus in Villeneuve d' Ascq, district of Pont de Bois.
In 1994, the Faculty of Law left Villeneuve d'Ascq, providing the opportunity for Lille 3 to restructure its space. Today, rich in buildings A and B, its extension, its modular buildings, and its remote locations, the university has ample space, it will continue to develop over the years to accommodate at best its entire university community, students, teachers, staff, French or foreign.

Staff and students have access to an extensive public transport network, with all campuses and research sites being located less than 5 minutes from a metro station and less than 30 minutes from each other.
