Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1916, St. Joseph's College has provided an affordable liberal arts education to a diverse group of students. Independent and coeducational, St. Joseph's prepares students for lives of integrity, intellectual and spiritual values, social responsibility, and service lives that are worthy of the College's motto: Esse consider — "To be, not to seem."
SJC Brooklyn challenges its approximately 1,200 students to develop their full potential and a joy of learning. With more than 400 faculty members, the College enjoys a student-to-faculty ratio that provides individual attention in an open, supportive atmosphere.
The College's location in Brooklyn puts it at the center of one of the nation's most diverse academic and cultural cities. The Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Public Library, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art are all minutes away from the College's doors.
With Manhattan just over the Brooklyn Bridge, students have quick and easy access to such world-renowned institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center.
Campus facilities include seven buildings and an outdoor theater across three blocks in the Clinton Hill neighborhood. St. Joseph's remains dedicated to maintaining low costs while upholding a strict standard of excellence. While retention rates at most colleges are slipping, St. Joseph's remains above the national average.

The honors program is designed to provide a challenging and rewarding learning experience for academically talented students, whatever their major field of study. Students in the program work in close settings with faculty in honors seminars and enjoy unique opportunities to explore the cultural and historical sites of New York City. Honors program students also can take classes that include subsidized trips to cities such as Boston and countries such as Italy and France.
Since 2002, St. Joseph's College's Office of Global Studies has provided a global learning experience. Our long- and short-term programs take students beyond the diverse ideas presented in the classroom, exposing them to a global environment of ideas, cultures, and ways of life.
From Italy's historic architecture to the green pastures of Ireland and experiential learning experiences in Nicaragua, our students have taken advantage of opportunities not offered in the classroom. In recent years, interest in short-term programs has dramatically increased, and the office, working in conjunction with faculty, has developed many programs. Short-term programs that have been developed include Argentina, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and Spain.

Students are encouraged to join clubs and organizations, participate in sports, and work on special projects such as Alternative Spring Break.
