There is plenty to see and do in this red rock wonderland where students have adventures in national and state parks through SUU's Outdoor Center. What's more, SUU's residential campus keeps more than 90 percent of students within walking distance, so there's always a friend nearby to join in the fun.
Each year Southern Utah university welcomes students from 56 different countries to our campus in Cedar City, Utah. They come to take part in our 100+ nationally recognized undergraduate programs and ten masters degree programs known for academic excellence. Many of our master's programs are available online for your convenience. As an international student, you will benefit significantly from the personal attention for which the University is well known. Our small class sizes - which average fewer than 30 students in 73 percent of our courses - allow professors to work closely with students and mentor them in their studies and career plans. The International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) office supports and assists international students and scholars during their time at Southern Utah University. ISSS provides visa information, employment advice, and international transcript articulation to the University's international students and scholars. We also offer Arrival Services for new students and scholars and provide a wide array of support services designed to promote international students' and scholars' academic and social success.
The ISSS staff advises the International Student Ambassador program and hosts several events and activities, including the International Food Fair, Lunar New Year celebration, sports tournaments, and ski trips. I also manage the federally mandated Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to ensure that all international students and scholars at SUU maintain their proper legal status under federal statutes and regulations.
Southern Utah University's campus offers a serene and peaceful backdrop to purposeful study and academic exploration. The 130-acre, tree-covered landscape is punctuated by an architectural blend of modern and historic buildings, 1.3 acres of flower beds, and a public art display that weaves campus together in story and metaphor. A safe, residential campus allows students to create lifelong friendships in conjunction with their academic endeavors.
The Office of Institutional Research & Assessment supports SUU's mission fulfillment by providing data and data analysis to inform institutional and programmatic planning, decision-making, and assessment. In addition to meeting internal data needs, the Office of IR & Assessment also represents SUU to external stakeholders by responding to report and data requests from state, federal, and other external agencies. Our office coordinates and collaborates with other entities on campus to ensure data integrity.
Our mission is to facilitate evidence-based and informed planning and decision-making by providing the right data to the right person at the right time in readily accessible and efficient ways and ensuring that the data is accurate, reliable, and uniform.
Furthermore, our mission is to facilitate a culture of student learning in which relevant, useful, and objective evidence is gathered and utilized to understand, facilitate, determine, and improve student learning.
The dramatic account of SUU founders provides an example of fortitude for today's modern university experience. In 1897, the newly organized Utah Legislature called for the hurried establishment of a teacher training school to provide for the region's emerging pioneer settlement communities.
With no time to lose, Cedar City residents organized winter lumbering expeditions and began pouring labor and resources into the project. Negotiating harsh storms while hauling timber from nearby mountains using only wooden wagons, the first building was dedicated in 1898, meeting the state's mandated deadline. Now known as Old Main, the University's first building stands as an inspirational legacy of fortitude, determination, and community triumph.
