Founded in 1893 in Frederick, Maryland, Hood College is a coeducational, independent, liberal arts college.
Hood offers 32 bachelor's degrees, 29 concentrations, 50 minors, and pre-professional preparation in medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, and law. Hood's Graduate School serves Frederick and surrounding regions' needs with 19 master's degrees, two doctorates, and ten graduate certificate programs. The graduate programs provide leading-edge content in business, STEM, humanities, and education.
College is about more than books and tests. You will refer to the next four years as your Hood experience, not just your Hood education. And that is because you are about to embark on life-changing experiences, where what you learn, whom you meet, and how you live will help define the person you will become. We have more than 50 clubs and organizations and more than 500 campus events each year.
Many colleges say they are diverse at Hood; 33 percent of our student body self-identify as members of underrepresented racial or ethnic populations. Our students hail from more than 28 states, more than 21 countries. We hold annual events celebrating cultural traditions and develop opportunities for the campus community to participate in initiatives and activities that promote awareness of cultural, social, economics, racial, gender, and other forms of diversity in our society.

The Center for Academic Achievement and Retention (CAAR) includes Tutoring, Student Success, and the Accessibility Services offices who are here to provide support to you! CAAR seeks to empower students as they develop into successful independent learners and provide targeted academic supports for known areas of academic difficulty. CAAR provides students with supports in academic skills building, academic advising and mentoring, writing and mathematics assistance, and accessibility support services. CAAR focuses on each student's goals and needs as they discover the interconnectedness of their academic programs and their personal goals.
The honors program at Hood is highly selective, admitting a limited number of outstanding students across all majors each year. Students form a diverse, supportive learning community through a four-year series of seminars, co-curricular activities, and social events based in the classroom and the Marx Center and supplemented by numerous off-campus excursions. Classes are seminar-style, with an emphasis on discussion and critical thinking. Testing is de-emphasized in favor of writing and collaborative projects.
Hood College offers a wide range of scholarships and awards, and 98 percent of our students receive some form of merit-based aid. All incoming students--freshman and transfer--are automatically considered for these scholarships at the time of admission, so you don't need to worry about filling out any additional applications!

For 125 years, Hood College has prepared students for successful careers and the responsibilities of citizenship. Hood traces its history to 1893 when the Potomac Synod of the Reformed Church of the United States—now the United Church of Christ—established the Woman's College of Frederick, which moved from the Potomac Synod's Mercersburg College in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.
