Texas College is a historically black college founded in 1894, by a group of CME ministers. Our mission, which continues to embody the principles of the Christian Methodist Episcopal church, is to ensure that the student body experiences balanced intellectual, psychological, social and spiritual development, aimed at enabling them to become active productive members of society where they live and work.

Texas College was founded as a historically black college in 1894 and is a coed, independent, four-year liberal arts institution. As an ethnically diverse liberal arts institution, you will gain the theoretical and foundational preparations designed to propel you into a major (and/or minors) that will equip you for graduate and/or professional schools, as well as the world of work.

We are a valuable economic engine in the city of Tyler, generating substantial economic returns consistently, year after year. According to a study commissioned by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and conducted by The University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth, Texas College generates $25 million in total economic impact for its local and regional economies.

The vision of Texas College is to establish within her, an environment that embraces a culture of learning. Such a culture addresses the teaching and learning process that under girds academics, athletics, services and supports that are beneficial to our students, the broader community, and our stakeholders at-large.

The vision embraces professionals who are:

2. Deliberate in teaching (and learning) that leads to content maturation and personal development of learners.
3. Passionate about the skill development and readiness of students for entry into the job market and/or graduate school.

The culture of learning also embraces the raising of standards and expectations of academic delivery, while also demonstrating values, morals and spiritual development that enhances life. The culture of learning encompasses the address of mechanisms and supports for retention, of both our students (who desire an education) and our professional family, who give of themselves.

The mission of the Financial Aid Office is to enhance the overall mission of the college and assist students with achieving their educational goals by providing students with adequate financial resources. We will use our knowledge of institutional, state and federal regulatios to manage financial resources and services for our students.

The mission of Career Services is to educate, develop, and assist students in successfully meeting the challenges of the ever-changing work environment for which they are preparing. Career Services will assist students and alumni in exploring part-time and full-time employment opportunities, internships as well as applying to graduate schools.

Residence Life at Texas College is an integral part of the student’s total educational experience. Students are provided opportunities to develop interpersonal skills, to increase their understanding of different cultures, and to learn self-discipline in organizing their time for study, work, and social activities. The experiences of residence hall living will enhance the student’s concern for the rights and interests of fellow students and promote Christian growth.

Residence Life can provide students with an environment that is comfortable and safe and in close proximity to classrooms, libraries as well as programs and services of the college. The environment of the residence halls are an important aspect of college life as well as to the development and wellbeing of residents. Programs and services are provided to positively shape the quality of the campus living experience.

Residential living can provide an opportunity for concentrated study, shared responsibility, cooperative and congenial living, self-management and group adhesiveness, factors which can be influential in promoting values in group processes. Within the residential learning environment individuals are challenged and supported to develop into productive community members who are prepared to enrich society.
