The City College of New York was originally founded as the Free Academy of the City of New York in 1847 by wealthy businessman and president of the Board of Education, Townsend Harris, who would go on to establish diplomatic relations between the United States and Japan. Ratified by a statewide referendum, it was established to provide children of immigrants and the poor access to free higher education based on academic merit alone.

The Baruch School of Business at the City College of New York, named after CCNY alumnus Bernard Baruch, opened on 23rd Street in Manhattan in 1919, and became Baruch College in 1961 with the establishment of The City University of New York - now the largest public urban university system in the United States, and consisting of 24 institutions, including its flagship, City College.

We have worked, for over 160 years, to nurture an academic community dedicated to the idea that a democratic and stable society needs the talents of each person, and the educational institutions of that society should develop those talents wherever they are found.

Graduate study is open to qualified students who possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or the equivalent from a foreign institution and an adequate background in the field of study that they wish to pursue. Normally the equivalent of an undergraduate major in the field is required, but the final judgment of preparation remains with the departments concerned and the Divisional Dean. Graduate credits used to meet undergraduate degree requirements cannot be transferred to a graduate program.

The City College Library System – seven facilities in five buildings and the affiliated CUNY Dominican Studies Library –is the largest within CUNY. The libraries are the crossroad of life at City College, offering a wide array of services to all members of the campus community, and providing leadership within the urban University in scholarship and research support, quality learning, enriched discourse and equity of access for diverse constituencies. The libraries provide Information Literacy instruction across the curriculum, host instructional workshops, a full calendar of exhibitions and a wide variety of cultural events.

The libraries own more than 1.6 million print volumes and provide access to more than 200,000 electronic books and 77.000 electronic journals. As a federal depository since 1884, the libraries hold more than 230,000 government documents. The collections can be accessed through the libraries' catalog and lists of online databases and online journal collections, and the online research subject guides allow focused inquiry 24/7. Specialized research help can be found online and at our reference service desks. The Interlibrary Loan Office obtains materials not found in the City College Libraries.

City College’s General Education Curriculum is an educational experience shared by all City College students. It is comprised of introductory coursework designed to give you the fundamental skills and background you need to pursue advanced work in your major or upper-level elective work, and to instill a habit of mind that sees all areas of knowledge as interrelated. You will be able to choose from a selection of courses that build fundamental skills, such as writing, research, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning, while introducing different categories of knowledge.

The City College art collection encompasses contemporary works acquired through Percent for Art projects, historic portraits and commissioned works, ancient artifacts and early casts, and the gifts of generous alumni, faculty and friends of the College.

CCNY is committed to becoming a sustainable campus and lowering its carbon footprint. We are adapting the way we teach, learn, conduct research and operate as an institution in order to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure campus sustainability by fostering environmentally sound habits and behaviors across the campus while engaging the Harlem community. CCNY will carry out this mission by exercising leadership in education and research, always mindful of our urban setting and the needs of the richly diverse population that we serve.
