The school was established as a result of the increased demand for Welsh-medium education in Llangollen. Ysgol y Gwernant was opened for the first time in September 2005. Today we have 152 pupils on roll. There has been a significant increase in the number of parents who decide to send their children to a Welsh-medium school as they realize the benefits of being bilingual.
We have 8 teachers and 5 support staff working at the school. The team is enthusiastic and works hard to raise standards. We pride ourselves in the high standards and achievements of the pupils, and the vast range of extracurricular activities offered at the school with pupils regularly successful at Urdd music competitions to sporting activities.
As a Welsh school, the emphasis will be on promoting knowledge and understanding of Welsh culture and fluency in the Welsh Language. Bilingualism is of paramount importance to this school. We hope to ensure a caring and happy environment for your child as well as providing a wide range of balanced learning opportunities for all children.
We also believe that we can only achieve the best for your child by close cooperation between home and school. There will be opportunities for you to share in your child’s education and the staff and we are always available to talk with you about any aspects of your child’s development.
We are concerned about all aspects of our pupils’ development and we hope that you will share with us in making this a successful period in your child’s life. The curriculum at Ysgol y Gwernant promotes learning, personal growth, and development. It includes the formal requirements, the extra-curricular activities we organize to enrich the experiences of the children, and the key skills, literacy, numeracy, and digital competence that underpin learning throughout the school. At Ysgol y Gwernant we aim to develop responsible, confident, and bilingual pupils who work well with others so that they can achieve their full potential. This is achieved mainly using a thematic approach.a
