Ysgol Melyd is a County Primary School in Meliden, North Wales, catering for children aged 4 – 11 years, including a Nursery Class. We currently have approximately 143 pupils on the roll. We have 1 Nursery class, which attends in the morning. Foundation Phase pupils are in two classes, Class 1 (Reception/ Year 1) and Class 2 (Year 1 and 2). In KS2 pupils are in mixed year classes, Class 3 (Year 3 and 4), Class 4 (Year 4 and 5), Class 5 (Year 5 and 6). Through our website, we hope to provide you with up-to-date information about our school, the curriculum, and our achievements, along with news about what each class has been learning about throughout the year.
Your child must attend school on time, every day. Absent children will miss important learning time, and any children who arrive late in school disrupt the learning both for themselves and their classmates. At Ysgol Melyd, we continually monitor attendance. Our attendance percentage last year was 94.5%. We are confident that this year with your support and by working together, we can achieve our target attendance percentage of 96%. To keep you informed of our progress we will post our current percentage on our home page each week.
Our main aim is to provide a pleasant and secure environment, where all the children are encouraged to develop as individuals, as well as acquiring sensitivity to the needs of others. Whilst attention is given to the basic skills, we also try to instill a healthy attitude towards school. ‘How to learn’, is important as well as ‘what is learned’. The rules of the school which are kept to a minimum, are meant to ensure an orderly society, based on trying to see that each child will fit into that society. Educational needs should include what the child needs for himself, and what he/she needs as a member of society. Some needs are of the present and others of the future.
The school curriculum, however, needs to be rooted upon educational criteria, which can be translated into appropriate curricula for children of all ages and attitudes. By ensuring ‘what is taught’, and ‘the way it is taught’, we should help children to realize their potential to the fullest extent. A list of definite aims of the school may therefore be stated so that they cover the following areas of capabilities, attitudes, and values.
