Our vision - Ysgol Griffith Jones aims to utilize evolving technologies as a vehicle to enhance learning without limits. Ysgol Griffith Jones has excellent buildings and facilities. Housing a self-contained Nursery the provision available for the younger child is second to none. The large school hall, together with the permanent and moveable stage offers excellent facilities for drama work and school functions. The extensive playing fields provide an impressive play area as well as providing opportunities for a wide range of sporting activities. A large gymnasium - one of the very few in any Primary School in Carmarthenshire - allows all pupils to participate in movement, gymnastics, indoor athletics, dance, etc. A new library was opened in April 2012 to support all pupils' reading requirements.
Ysgol Griffith Jones has two streams, a Welsh stream, and an English stream. Welsh Stream - Classes are taught through the medium of Welsh. English Stream - Classes are taught mainly through the medium of English with Welsh taught as a second language. The school Nursery and Reception Classes have Welsh as the main medium instruction. From year 2 onwards, parents are given the choice of Welsh Stream or English Stream education.
Ysgol Griffith Jones was invited by DECELLS in 2009 to be part of the Welsh program. This compounded the school being known as a ‘Thinking School’ following other initiatives such as Dewch I Feddwl and CAME programs. Developing thinking and assessment for learning program was set up in 2005 by DECELLS (Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills) The program focused on the development, implementation, and dissemination of good practice in the teaching of developing thinking and assessment for learning strategies.
Ysgol Griffith Jones began its successful Eco program in 2006 being able to integrate and encourage its pupils to engage with environmental and sustainable development issues. The program continuously provides a highly structured system for the environmental management of schools.
Pupils take key roles in decision making and participation to reduce the environmental impact of their school. In this way, Eco-schools extend learning beyond the classroom and develops responsible citizenship attitudes both at home and in the wider community.
