The University of Niigata Prefecture is fully accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. UNP opened in April 2009 and operated as a local independent administrative institution (public university corporation). The university comprises two faculties: the Faculty of International Studies and Regional Development and the Faculty of Human Life Studies, and admits approximately 240 students per year.

The University of Niigata Prefecture conducts an extensive range of research on society's various challenges from international, regional, and human perspectives. We are striving to become a university that develops graduates who will play a core role in identifying and overcoming such challenges while making significant contributions to our region's development.

The University of Niigata Prefecture endeavors to:

  • Provide a campus experience that enables students to realize their ambitions.
  • Develop graduates able to compete in the global workplace.
  • Nurture young leaders ready to play an essential role in the future of the region.
  • Collaborate with those needing support in the development of problem-solving competencies. Put together a faculty that will expand the role of Niigata Prefecture in Northeast Asia.

Our region is blessed with a rich natural environment and food culture and the potential to become a hub for international exchange in East Asia. The mission of the University of Niigata Prefecture is to nurture graduates who can put these strengths to fair use in resolving the various issues the region faces as it strives to become both a vibrant exchange hub for East Asian countries and a place where people choose to live because of the excellent child-raising environment and the long and healthy lives enjoyed by residents. Such graduates will need an international perspective such as foreign language ability and global viewpoint, a deep understanding of the region, and the rich human qualities important for living and working together with other people, regardless of whether they are from Japan or abroad.

For this reason, the University of Niigata Prefecture has defined its Basic Principles as: "Development of an International Perspective," "Regional Emphasis," and "Development of Human Qualities."

Cultivate mature, well-grounded, humane, empathic, creative, and motivated graduates who will be ready and able to play a constructive role in international society. Develop capabilities in students necessary for meaningful interaction with today's increasingly sophisticated, complex, and specialized society by teaching socially useful skills that include English-centric communication skills, skills required in child care facilities, and expert knowledge for providing nutritional guidance.

Provide adequate support for students by introducing an adviser system tailored to address the needs of all students and provide them with the best possible assistance to realize their talents and achieve their goals while considering financial and other burdens that all students face during university life. Contribute to creating a better local society by producing graduates who appreciate the regional culture and the natural environment and who can act meaningfully based on their knowledge of society and its culture.

The roots of regional prosperity can be found in the development of the region's people. Individuals rich in human qualities are needed to create a society in which people can live and prosper together and promote exchange with other nations. To cultivate such qualities, at the University of Niigata Prefecture, we offer an education tailored to each student's needs. We provide an environment where students can actively encourage and engage with one another as they learn together.
