Shobi University's motto "Wisdom and love" holds the meaning of respecting beauty (shobi) to achieve higher culture (all-round education) and nurturing wisdom and love for consideration and benevolence.
The forefathers of the University founder, such as Naoshi Akamatsu, were physicians for the Kasama Domain's lords during the Edo Period. They particularly emphasized humanity's essential nature, such as love (benevolence), which appears in the concept "Medicine is a benevolent art." At the time of its founding, the University's educational policy was "To nurture reliable individuals with rich culture and promising musical training." The root of the motto "Wisdom and love" lies at the core of "love," which is the ideology of the founder who considered rich "culture" to be the "cultivation of wisdom."
Shobi University was established at the beginning of the 21st Century as a four-year university comprised of two faculties and three departments, namely, the Faculty of Informatics for Arts consisting of the Departments of Music Expression Information Expression, and the Faculty of Policy Management comprising the Department of Policy Management.
Advanced informatization, which represents networking progress that made inroads during the 20th Century, promoted accelerated changes in the environment surrounding media. This brought about substantial changes to communication as well as to the world of music and art. The internationalization and globalization of society, on the other hand, had impacts on government administration, economy, culture, and lifestyles that shook the very foundation of our society, leading to an era in which new paradigms and interdisciplinary academic studies are required. The University has been searching for a desirable state of higher education from an all-around education standpoint. It seeks to offer this education following the research topic of "Mankind and culture" and based on the University's motto "Wisdom and love," which expresses its fundamental stance toward humankind and learning.
Our prior institution offering junior college education was dissolved progressively so that a new university could be established that would offer four-year programs of study aimed at the substantiation of a comprehensive yet specialized educational system. This change was made in response to unprecedented structural changes that have occurred in our society. The guiding principles for the establishment of the University are "Courage and creativity." This is an educational policy based on the concept of always taking resolute actions with "courage," not only in the artistic fields with a primary focus on music but also in fields that are new to all those involved in academic studies. At the same time, the University nurtures individuals who are capable of "creating" new fields and solutions on their own and who have the "courage" to share their "creations" with others.
The University currently offers tertiary level education administered according to the motto "Wisdom and love" to provide education founded on the guiding principles for the University's establishment, "Courage and creativity."
In April 2018, Shobi University will evolve into a university where learning is more closely connected to real-world needs. In the Department of Music Expression, we will establish three new majors, providing students with a choice of nine different majors to match their aims. The two departments of the Faculty of Policy Management will introduce five new courses that will be useful in the real world and facilitate practical, career-focused learning. Both of these changes will involve developing curricula in which learning directly connects to students' future careers. We aim to build a university that enables every student to live the life that he/she truly desires in the future.
The University's very name derives from the idea of respecting beauty (shobi). Since our founding, we have upheld the motto "wisdom and love," nurturing individuals capable of success in various social areas, including music and the arts, information expression, policy studies, sports, and culture. While placing importance on providing education that corresponds to our students' individual qualities, we will continue to reform our educational methods in response to the changing times, while we go forward building new traditions, at the same time, we aim to foster students not only with broad perspectives and advanced academic abilities but also with considerate hearts.
During their studies, Shobi University students will encounter many people and have a variety of experiences as they make efforts to spread their wings in the real world. Our teaching faculty and staff members are all very much looking forward to meeting you here on campus.
