"We desire to develop students who are willing to grow to their potential." In these words are incorporated the full basis of the University's administration. In an age of universal university admissions, some students are deficient in the necessary academic skills developed in the past in studying for exams. I think this is simply that they have not developed their abilities to this point. For this purpose, and to support students' necessary academic skills, the University has set up the Remedial Education Center, and, additionally, in the "Introductory Book Reading," which has been imposed as a course obligation for all students, books are closely read in a seminar format, which affords all students opportunities to grapple with texts and think.
Such a thorough education is impossible before entry into the University. In the University, a chance arises again for them to train themselves and acquire the strength to rely on themselves. At the same time, as reviewing the fundamentals, we believe it is necessary to stretching oneself after entering the University.
Through workplace experience in summer internships that are accepted by approx. Fifty companies and organizations, awareness of finding employment is intensified, and meanwhile, it becomes possible to get a real sense of society. In community alliance volunteer activities, through various community activities, ties with the community are promoted. The confidence that is built from attempting to do something and succeeding is of incalculable value. Eighty percent of students come from within the prefecture. Through ties to the community, our students are brought up inside the community.
We also have begun work to upgrade the teaching and educational abilities of instructors. A system of course evaluations by students and an open class system under which teachers can sit-in on each other's classes have also been introduced to improve all aspects of quality. We are also advancing the internationalization of education and research. Short-term and long-term overseas training and exchange study is carried out at sister, friend, and partner schools in America, Canada, England, and China. Furthermore, a mutual exchange agreement was concluded last August with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a variety of academic and cultural exchange activities are expected.
The school song of Jumonji is "Live as a person to contribute to the society, training ourselves academically and physically," and this is in accord with the ardent desires of the founder to develop women with the strength on their own to be of service in the world. His concept of "desiring to send out people who will grow even further after entering society" is even now being carried forward.
For students who are reading to become adults, Jumonji Studies seek wisdom to live as women while showing off their individuality.
Common subjects to be taken in all departments -- four areas of "creating a foundation for learning," "learning local community and society," "learning independence and how to live women," and "learning about mankind and nature" – are furnished.
Amongst these, in "general subjects" in the area of "creating a foundation of learning," in particular, students learn through the "Crown Courses," in close connection with society from instructors who work in the private sector.
School days are when students are flooded with various "values" and "knowledge." For this purpose, we intensely focus on students' individuality, which is susceptible to drifting through small-class size education.
For Freshmen and Sophomores, we have introduced the class designated teacher system, where the instructors know the students' faces and names and understand their dreams and problems. From the Junior year on, we back-up the student's growth through seminar activities and dedicated support. At Jumonji, we are proud of the closeness between teacher and student -- where the student can freely discuss anything.
With brick-colored school buildings ornamented with cherry, zelkova, and Ginko trees and grounds with grassy lawns and wooded areas of primeval trees, Jumonji is a nature-rich learning environment. In tune with the landscape as it slowly changes through the four seasons, awareness of "the now" becomes constant. During these crucial four years of university life, students envision themselves in the future.
