Many of our staff are known as active practitioners in their field, including sports journalists who present on radio and TV, music lecturers who play live concerts, and media staff who act on the small screen. Employability is at the forefront of our work, and we have the facilities to offer hands-on experience.
The School of Creative Arts and Engineering's mission is to develop the artists, designers, engineers, actors, writers, poets, historians, diplomats, civic leaders, teachers, geographers, entrepreneurs, and international humanitarians of the future. We focus on our students' work readiness and educate them to be analytical and active global citizens. In addition to employability and creative skills for the workplace, we develop our students' critical, writing, and reflective skills.
We offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and research-level opportunities across a broad spectrum of disciplines from History to Performance Arts, Philosophy to Geography, Fine Art to Photography, Illustration to Ceramics, and Electronic to Mechanical Engineering. Our staff has one foot in the industry to ensure our students have as much exposure to their chosen career paths as possible. Visiting speakers, educational and theatre visits, industry briefs, and placements enhance academic lectures and stimulating workshop environments.
Our students also benefit from excellent academic resources and well-equipped studio spaces and laboratories at our Stoke campus. Students have the chance to showcase their work at annual public and industry events such as New Designers, grades, and the Art and Design Degree Show. The School of Health and Social Care offers a range of undergraduate courses, from nursing and midwifery to operating department practice to social work and social welfare.
We support students through all stages of their career, from their first degree to continuing professional development and postgraduate study. We also run a range of workforce development modules and study days. Excellent facilities on our Stoke-on-Trent campus – and at our two new Centres of Excellence in Healthcare Education in Stafford and Shrewsbury – provide an innovative learning environment for health and social care students undertaking professional study.
We work with employers to ensure that all our students get the best possible practical experience in healthcare, social work, and social welfare – preparing them for the workplace. Working in partnership with employers such as the National Health Service (NHS), West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS), local authorities, and independent and voluntary health and social care agencies, we deliver a great learning experience. And we are always seeking to improve the quality of health and social care through education, research, and innovation.
The School of Law, Policing and Forensics have a range of exciting undergraduate and postgraduate courses spanning academic disciplines from the law, through criminology, to forensic investigation.
Flexible full-time, part-time, on-campus, and distance learning options fit our students' unique needs and lifestyles. Our international partnerships let students study in their home country while earning an internationally-recognized qualification from Staffordshire University. With degrees accredited by the Law Society's likes, the Chartered Society of Forensic Science and Skills for Justice, everything we do positions our students for the next step in their career. We are also part of a trailblazing consortium working with the College of Policing to reshape police education. This will include new degree apprenticeships for police officers.
Our specialist facilities include forensic science and criminalistics laboratories, a fully functioning crime scene house, and mock law courts, all of which provide all students with a hands-on learning experience. Our staff are respected experts in their academic disciplines and contribute to contemporary debate and technological advances. This adds up to a positive impact on the local, national, and international community.
The School of Life Sciences and Education works with key external partners to deliver psychology, sport, exercise, biological sciences, and education courses. Our courses range from two-year accelerated degrees to fully online Masters's degrees to professional doctorates. From day one, students are immersed in exciting, interactive, and digitally supported learning opportunities. By focusing on applying research to real-world settings and working with employers and key industry and professional partners, we provide students with the skills and networks to maximize their employability and career prospects.
Our staff conducts internationally recognized research, which is making a real difference to regional communities. Our courses and research are based on the Stoke-on-Trent campus. Our students, staff, and partners enjoy the state-of-the-art learning and teaching spaces on hand within the Science Centre.
With partners in more than 17 countries, our graduates have a global impact. They have gone on to become CEOs, to work in NGOs such as the World Bank, and to be government ministers. But we also have an essential role in driving the economic regeneration of Staffordshire and many other counties.
Our applied work in higher and degree apprenticeships, corporate programs, and internationally recognized research in economics is a crucial part of what we do. It informs our teaching and enhances our students' experience, and is essential in its own right.
