Welcome to Scotch Oakburn College, where our mission is to provide an exceptional, holistic education by providing three inter-woven programs: the academic, the pastoral, and the co-curricular. The school's offerings may seem vast and sometimes complicated to the outsider, so we warmly invite you to browse our website and follow up with a personal tour of the College. It is an excellent school with a welcoming and engaged community of students, staff, and families, and we are confident you will soon see how your child will thrive in this stimulating environment.

The College's holistic education must develop well-rounded young people who can make informed decisions and confident to engage positively and productively with the world beyond the College. Scotch Oakburn facilitates the continual development of literacy and numeracy's fundamental skills, alongside other essential life-skills such as communication and collaboration, inquiry and reflection, problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, and life-long learning.

In recent years, Scotch Oakburn College has been repeatedly recognized for its innovative approach to curriculum, teaching, and facility design. Our stimulating programs are delivered in a wide variety of environments, from state-of-the-art, award-winning learning spaces and performance venues to our extensive gardens, wetlands, sporting fields, and gymnasiums, and out into Tasmania's beautiful natural environment.

The College's talented, professional, and highly qualified staff are our greatest asset. They continually learn, reflect, and modernize to utilize best-practice teaching methods and provide the highest standard of education and care for our students. The rapport that staff builds with students, and the subsequent engagement in the College's life that those relationships promote, are vital in nurturing a sense of belonging and building the 'safe' environment in which students can be brave enough to take risks.

As Socrates so wisely said, 'Education is the kindling of a flame, not filling a vessel.' At Scotch Oakburn College, we pride ourselves on our exhaustive determination to provide the very best environment for igniting that love of learning in every single child.

Holistic education connects academic learning to the natural world, our community, and our values to give meaning to learning and to balance mental, physical, and emotional growth in each student. Our distinctive and evolving 'Vision for Learning' is based on educational research and experience to develop students that are:

  • Inquiring and reflective thinkers
  • Effective communicators
  • Self-directed, well balanced, and ethical people
  • Responsible citizens
  • World contributors
  • Informed, lifelong learners

Our culture promotes an inclusive community with strong school spirit, cultural diversity, and respect for all's social and emotional well-being. All community members' actions and behavior and the model's opportunities and frame the following values.

  • Grace
  • Responsibility
  • Compassion
  • Belonging
  • Inclusivity
  • Integrity
  • Commitment
  • Humility
  • Resilience

Scotch Oakburn College was created in 1979 with the amalgamation of Oakburn College, formerly Methodist Ladies' College (1886), and Scotch College (1901).

The successful amalgamation brought together two fine traditions that stretch back to the 19th century. The founders of both schools saw education not only in terms of academic qualifications but also in character development, trained against the background of the Christian faith.

Scotch Oakburn has a long and significant connection with the history of Launceston and the broader Tasmanian community. It has been educating Tasmanians, and students from interstate and overseas, for over 134 years.

Scotch Oakburn is proud of its long history and the sense of community and school spirit instilled in each student.

Scotch Oakburn College has a long and proud history. Our College Archives is an essential record of the existence and past achievements of the College, as archives can help to maintain a sense of belonging, stability, eternal values, and continuity in our lives.

The Archives collection includes both paper documents and objects related to the history of MLC/Oakburn College, Scotch College, and Scotch Oakburn College. These include uniforms, school magazines, an extensive photographic collection, trophies, books, badges, and other memorabilia. The paper collection includes press clippings, speeches, reports, letters, committee minutes, to name just a few.
