Phranakhon Rajabhat University was the first teacher production institute in Thailand, established by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn.Chulachomklao under the name of "Secondary School Teacher Training School" on October 12, 1949. Its responsibility was to produce teachers to support the expansion of the new bureaucracy.

"Secondary School Teacher Training School" was renamed to the "Primary School Teacher Training School," offering 2-year primary school teaching courses for students who graduated from high school and certified primary school teachers. the "Primary School Teacher Training School" had changed its name to "Phranakhon Primary School Teacher Training School." This school had offered a 3-year course for anyone who would like to be certified as a primary school teacher.

The Ministry of Education has promoted Phranakhon Teacher Training School to "Phranakhon Teacher College". The College had offered a 2-year course in Higher Diploma Level. It also offered courses in industrial arts, such as mechanics, electrical, metal, construction, and porcelain works. Later in, more courses had been offered.

Phranakhon Teacher College, together with Phranakhon College of Education, offered College Teaching Courses using the College of Education curriculum. Any High Diploma graduates or 2-year Diploma graduates would be accepted to this College to pursue their Bachelor's degree.

The Teachers College Act was enacted. As a result, Phranakhon Teacher College was allowed to offer an undergraduate degree. Students who had studied the Higher Teacher Curriculum would obtain a Bachelor of Education degree.

Phranakhon Teacher College offered three more courses besides teaching courses in Education, Science, and Liberal Arts.

The Phranakhon Teacher College had changed its status to "Rajabhat Phranakhon Institute" under the Rajabhat Institutes Act BE 2538 by His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His Majesty had graciously granted the royal seal to be used as the symbol of the institution.

Later on, Phranakhon Rajabhat Institute had become a juristic person by the Rajabhat University Act BE 2547. It was renamed "Phranakhon Rajabhat University" to carry out as a higher education institution for local development and a Thai university for liberation. Phranakhon Rajabhat University had offered courses for both undergraduate and graduate students up till now.

• Research, strengthen knowledge and promote innovation to enhance sustainability in local community development and small industry and social development.
• To improve the quality of teachers and personnel to meet the organization and society's needs.
• To provide academic services and transfer technology to local and society to improve the quality and standard of living.
• To conserve, develop, and provide information on religion, arts, and culture.
• To establish teaching and learning as well as a researching network with domestic and international educational institutions.

The objectives of Phranakhon Rajabhat University are as follows:

• Integrated teaching and learning with research and development to provide graduates with international standard quality, wisdom, professional skills, and ethic that meet local and society's needs in the knowledge and intellectual base economy.
• Provide a student-centered learning style with variety and flexibility and self-study and life-time learning education, both formal and informal, to everyone equally.
• Focus on research and development and innovation, which will sustain and strengthen the small industrial communities and locals.
• Provide quality academic services and transfer technology to the community and society and act as a center of information on religion, arts, and culture.
• Improve and develop an educational management system and resources sharing through management by results to become a top-class university.
• Strengthen networking in academic and research to achieve international standards.
• Strengthen Thainess and Sufficiency Economy philosophy as well as establishing knowledge sharing between community and local.
