Rabindranath Tagore was a great Indian polymath who was born on May 7th, 1861 in Kolkata, India. He was a poet, novelist, playwright, essayist, painter, musician, philosopher and social reformer. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti or Rabindra Jayanti in India.

Rabindranath Tagore was born in a wealthy and influential Bengali family and was the youngest of fourteen siblings. He was a prodigy and was well-versed in Bengali and English literature from a very young age. He was sent to England to study law when he was seventeen, but he soon returned to India and devoted himself to literature and art. He wrote his first poem at the age of eight and his first short story at sixteen.

Rabindranath Tagore is best known for his poetry and his most famous work is Gitanjali, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. He was also a prolific writer of short stories, novels, plays, essays and songs. He wrote over two thousand songs, which are known as Rabindra Sangeet and are still popular in India today. His works have been translated into many languages and his influence on Indian literature and culture is immense.

Rabindranath Tagore was a great humanitarian and social reformer who was deeply concerned about the plight of the poor and the oppressed. He was a strong advocate of education and founded the Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, West Bengal. He was also a great proponent of Indian independence and was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated with great enthusiasm in India. His works are read, discussed and performed on this day. His songs are sung and his paintings are displayed in various art galleries. In his honour, a number of awards and scholarships are also given to students and artists.
